A Scout is reverent. He is reverent toward God. He is faithful in his religious duties and respects the convictions of others in matters of custom and religion.
Tigers & Wolves are eligible to earn their "Light of Christ" award this year. The purpose of this award is to help your son develop a personal relationship with Jesus. The activities are designed to be done with the family. The Cub Scouts are encouraging your son to grow in his faith through your family. Some of the requirements for this award are to learn some prayers, recognize religious symbols, read from the Bible, do some chores, and draw pictures. It's pretty easy, and if absolutely necessary, it could be done in a day.
Bears & Webelos , which are our 8 to 10 year olds, are eligible for the "Parvuli Dei" award. The purpose of this award is to discover God's presence in their daily lives and to develop a positive self-image through contributions they make to the community. Parvuli Dei CANNOT be done in a day---a week, maybe, but not a day. Your scout will be asked to read Bible stories, have an interview with a priest, cut out pictures to make a mural, discuss the special gifts of each member of your family, discuss with someone in the parish what his/her job involves, pray with your family, make a list of Holy Days/special Feast Days, make a gift and give it to a disadvantaged person, plan how you would make the world a better place, if you had your own business, and teach someone a skill, and learn a skill from them.
If you'd like to participate in one of these religious award achievements, let me know so we can get you a workbook. Religious awards are presented and acknowledged at a special Bishop’s Mass. Your scout will receive the award from the Bishop on Feb. 25 with a reception to follow
Good luck, and many blessings to your son and your family as you grow together in your faith.
