The Raingutter Regatta is a fun Cub Scout activity where Scouts use kits to build trimaran sailboats. These sailboats are "wind-powered" by blowing on the sail. Scouts have the freedom to make their boats aerodynamic and decorate them as they wish. The climax of this event is when the Scouts race their boats in water-filled rain gutters during our pack meetings.
Let's remind ourselves of the Cub Scout Motto, "Do Your Best." In the spirit of good sportsmanship, let's respect each other and cherish the friendly competition ahead. Now, let's explore the rules and get ready for the race!
The race is open to all registered Cub Scouts in Pack 229, as well as their siblings. However, please note that younger siblings may not be able to race due to height restrictions.
Each Scout or sibling may enter only one boat in the competition. We expect Scouts to actively participate in building their boat, which includes designing, sanding, gluing, painting, and decorating.
Boats must be constructed during the current program year. Boats that have competed in previous regattas are not eligible.
Before competing, all boats must undergo a technical inspection to ensure they meet the prescribed specifications outlined in the Construction Rules section below. The Captain (the Scout or sibling) may be asked to correct any issues found during inspection.
Upon passing inspection, boats will be registered under the Captain's name.
The actual race will involve two inflatable "Raingutters" on tables or sawhorses.
Scouts may propel their boats by blowing on the sails directly or using the provided straw. No other body parts may be used to move the boat.
Hands may only be used to upright a turned-over boat and may not be used to advance the boat.
Each boat must start with the back of the boat touching the end of the rain gutter.
When the starter says go, Scouts will propel their boats by blowing on the sail directly or using the straw provided.
The first boat to reach the finish line (the opposite end of the gutter) is the winner of that heat. Finish line officials will determine the winner. In case of a tie, a rerun of that heat will be held.
If a boat gets damaged during a race, the results will stand. A race may be rerun only if the judges find a compelling reason to do so.
Unsportsmanlike conduct by any participant or spectator may result in expulsion from the competition and/or the race area.
The boat must be newly constructed for the current Cub Scouting year. While parental supervision is allowed, Scouts are encouraged to be substantially involved in building their boats.
Boats must be made from the official BSA Raingutter Regatta Trimaran Boat Kit. All parts provided in the kit, including the two outriggers, polymer hull, mast, sail, and screws, must be used in the boat construction. No substitutions are allowed.
Additional parts, decals, paint, and glue are permitted. However, only boats with dried paint, decorations, and secure glue (adhesives) will be allowed to compete.
Outriggers/Hull: The outriggers must be between 6.5 inches and 7 inches in length and must be solid without splits or multiple parts. They should be evenly placed and cut as per the enclosed instructions.
The mast may not be higher than 7 inches from the deck or shorter than 6 inches. The boat should resemble the Trimaran Boat displayed on the box, and no keel or rudder may be added.
Sail: Boats must use the sail provided in the kit, which may be decorated and trimmed but not enlarged or modified. The sail may only be attached to the mast using glue; no mechanical fasteners are allowed. The sail must not make contact with any part of the boat except the mast.
The mast hole is molded into the top of the plastic hull and is the only permissible placement for the mast. The mast must be perpendicular (90 degrees) to the hull, and angling the mast in any direction is not allowed.
Above-waterline modifications for creative or decorative purposes are allowed as long as they do not affect sail performance. Details such as figures, decals, and paint are permissible as long as they are securely glued or fastened to the boat. We encourage Scouts to decorate their boats creatively.
Awards will be presented as follows:
Den: 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place for each rank & open class (siblings)
Pack 229: 1st, 2nd, & 3rd placeĀ
Design Category: Most Patriotic, Most Scout Spirit, Scout's Favorite.
Please remember that the parents running this event are volunteers who generously contribute their time to make it enjoyable for everyone. As we compete and have fun, let's appreciate their dedication in creating this wonderful experience for us. We're all part of the Scouting family, so let's make it a great event together!
Here are some additional key principles to remember:
Respect for Others: Everyone has different skills and experiences. Respect your fellow Scouts and parents, regardless of their abilities.
Follow the Rules: Rules ensure fairness and a level playing field. Always adhere to them.
Winning and Losing: In every competition, there are winners and losers. Whether you win or lose, practice good sportsmanship. Avoid bragging if you win and bitterness if you lose. Say, "I did my best," and be happy for others' successes.
Appreciation: Be able to appreciate and congratulate others for their achievements and efforts.
Honesty: Honesty is paramount. Always be truthful in your actions and interactions.
Remember, we are here to have fun, learn, and build lasting memories together. We wish all participants the best of luck in the Raingutter Regatta!
